Butterfly Bandage or Glue? Choosing the Right Treatment for You

Butterfly Bandage or Glue? Choosing the Right Treatment for You

5 Minute Read

Cuts and lacerations can happen in the blink of an eye! While many minor wounds can be treated at home, some may require professional care, which you can conveniently schedule same or next day at WOW Healing Care. In this post, we’ll explore two effective treatments for minor cuts and lacerations: butterfly bandages and skin glue. Each works differently and is suited to specific types of wounds, so understanding their applications can help you choose the right option.

When Would I Need Either?

“Cuts and lacerations vary in severity and intensity,” says Dr. Edwards, our leader here at WOW Healing Care. “Each type of wound requires a different approach to ensure proper healing.”

For example, butterfly bandages or skin glue are ideal for treating small, straight, and shallow cuts that can’t be adequately covered by regular bandages. While these solutions can be applied at home, seeking the care of an experienced healthcare provider can ensure better results. If the bandages aren’t applied correctly, the wound may not be able to heal properly or worse, become infected and require additional medical treatment.

How Do I Choose Between the Two?

If your wound is small, shallow, and/or straight, butterfly bandages or glue are effective options. Both are designed to hold the edges of a wound together, but they differ in application and durability. Your healthcare provider can help you determine the most suitable choice. Here’s a closer look at each option:

  1. Butterfly Bandages

Butterfly bandages, also known as Steri-Strips, are small adhesive strips that hold wound edges together while the skin heals naturally. They’re easy to apply and are commonly used for minor injuries.

Butterfly bandages are ideal for:

  • Small, shallow cuts less than 1/4-inch deep.
  • Wounds in low-motion areas where the adhesive is unlikely to detach.
  • Patients who prefer a simple, gentle removal process once healing is complete.

Butterfly bandages are particularly convenient because they can be applied at home or by a doctor and removed without irritating the skin.

  1. Skin Glue

Skin glue, also called Dermabond or liquid adhesive, is a flexible sealant that binds the edges of a wound together and creates a protective barrier as the skin heals. It’s better suited for slightly deeper cuts or wounds in areas prone to movement.

Skin glue is a good choice for:

  • Moderately deep cuts up to 1/2-inch deep.
  • Wounds with slight gaps between the edges.
  • High-motion areas, such as knuckles, knees, or other joints, where adhesive flexibility is essential.
  • Cuts on hands or fingers, where water resistance is beneficial for handwashing.

Skin glue is durable and water-resistant, making it less likely to peel off prematurely in areas that experience frequent movement.

Key Points to Consider

When deciding between butterfly bandages and skin glue, keep these considerations in mind:

  1. Wound Depth: Butterfly bandages are often the better choice for shallow cuts, while skin glue is more effective for slightly deeper wounds.
  2. Location: Butterfly bandages are ideal for low-motion areas, while skin glue is preferred for joints or high-movement regions.
  3. Patient Preference: Some individuals appreciate the simplicity of butterfly bandages, while others prefer the flexibility and durability of skin glue.

Caring for Wounds Treated with Butterfly Bandages or Glue

Proper aftercare is essential to ensure fast and safe healing:

  • Clean the Wound: Gently wash the area with mild soap and water before applying butterfly bandages or skin glue.
  • Keep the Wound dry: Avoid excessive water exposure for at least 24-48 hours after treatment, especially if using skin glue.
  • Watch for Infection: Watch for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge. Contact your doctor if you notice any of these symptoms.

When to Seek Emergency Care

While butterfly bandages and skin glue are great for many minor injuries, some wounds need medical attention beyond what these treatments can offer. You should seek emergency care if you experience any of these signs.

  • Excessive Bleeding: If bleeding persists after 10-15 minutes of firm pressure, the wound may need stitches or staples.
  • Deep Lacerations: A medical professional should evaluate any wounds deeper than 1/2 inch or those with wide openings.
  • Injuries Near Tendons Bones: Cuts over joints, fingers, or other sensitive areas may need evaluation to prevent nerve or tendon damage. If you notice any exposed tendon or bone, this is a definite sign to seek emergency care.
  • Dirty or Contaminated Wounds: Injuries caused by dirty or rusty objects may require a tetanus shot and professional cleaning.
  • Facial Wounds: Cuts on the face should be treated by a doctor to minimize scarring and ensure precise closure.
